Macsian 85 ,Personality Spotlight - Rahim Kueh Badak

Rahim
The kueh badak has been served in our school's tuckshop for many many years , the Macsians top favourites history can be traced back in the late 60s or even earlier. During recess , most of us will race to Ayah ( An old Indian man running the stall , Ayah means Uncle in Tamil ) for the kueh badak , as usual the transactions goes out of control as there were too many of us trying to get at least a piece or two . Some paid for it and some opportunist may just stretch their thieving hands and grab it without paying. I must admit , I was among the thieving little rascal. The guilt haunts me till today , please forgive me Ayah. ( Robin , Henry , Nazaruddin - please take note hehe)
The name Kueh Badak itself is very interesting and unique. In other parts of Malacca and other parts of the country, it is called Epok Sayor , for us being associated with Tranquerah area , traditionally its has always been called Kueh Badak . Kueh Badak is actually a curry puff like shell , stuffed with bean sprouts , dried chillie paste and dried grago ( geragau ) , served with the tangy flavoured sauce made of fresh chillies , vinegar and a little sugar and salt. According to Rahim , the Kueh Badak recipe has been handed over for several generations. His mother a maestro in Malay traditional delicacies like Nasi Lemak , Mee rebus which the family used to sell back in the 70s and 80s at the same location.
Currently there are three different stalls selling and of course they are all located in Tranquerah district. One of them is run by our fellow classmate Rahim. His stall is located at the opposite of our grand old ACS. Assisting Rahim are his wifey and kids , his sisters and mum. Rahim's Kueh Badak is very popular among locals and visitors alike and has been highlighted in several local food websites. Operating hours are from 2pm till stocks lasts and opens daily.
For orders please call Rahim - 0163218384 . The Macsian 85 wish all the best to Rahim and his Family .
p/s
Attention all Macsian 85 , as part of the tradition , Rahim's Kueh Badak will be in one of our menu in the coming Macsian 85 Annual Reunion Dinner

The mouth-watering , heavenly Kueh Badak

An afternoon delight , aren't you mouthwatering yet?

Remembering Mr Chua Cheng Chye - words from your editor

I first met Mr Chua when I was taken to register to ACS Primary School in December of 1974 , I entered Standard One in 1975 , Mr Chua was then our Headmaster . I have some memories of his kindness and being a soft spoken gentlemen and he’d always store some school uniforms in spare for the students who soiled their pants , few of my classmates did. He retired in 1977 when I was in Standard 3 , replaced by the fierce looking , no nonsense Mr Kua Beng Choon.

I had the chance of meeting Mr Chua again in 1982 , when my older brother of Macsian 77 / ex BB , had forced me ( due to my mischief’s ) to get enlisted in the Boys Brigade. Mr Chua taught us discipline , obedience , humility , tolerance and sharing good Christian values to all of us . He has no reservations over the rich or the poor , race and religions. Though a Buddhist , I am proud to say that I was brought up basically in a Christian way , thanks to Mr Chua for his endless dedication working with young people in shaping them to be a better person. He builds our character and developed our talent.

In the Boys Brigade (BB), I was made the Company’s bugler as Mr Chua deliberately assigned me due to my asthma, he would keep on saying that being a bugler would build up my lungs. In many of the BB outdoor activities I’ve learnt to swim and now I am a certified scuba diver. Like my seniors before me , I’ve also had the privilege of having great ,meals at Mr Chua’s White House. His maid Bibiek would prepare us pohpiah , mee rebus , the famous chicken pie etc and always hot tea with milk. The Bibiek was a true maestro in Nyonya dishes These occasion only happened on Sunday afternoons , we would go to there to do some gardening and repairing work on the White House. In those days , there were some rumours of some interesting magazines kept in the White House , I would sneak to look out for it but never been successful , I’m still wondering where those magazines were kept. I also had a very rare chance of encountering a furiously angry Mr Chua , it happened once when the Boys got out of hand , it was a frightening sight , it made our little manhood shrunk !

Mr Chua was a Great Educator and father figure to us all . Appreciation to his work and dedication is limitless. He will always be remembered in our hearts .

The 1st Tranquerah Scout Troop was given the honour of distributing funeral service literatures. Macsians all over Malaysia and Singapore came to pay their last respect. The late Mr Chua was cremated at Jelutong crematorium and the ashes be placed at Nilai Memorial park

No words can sum it up,

No gifts will ever be enough

To show our appreciation to you,

The people whose lives many of us made so tough.

Some may say it is your job to go the extra mile,

But you even go as far as making each student smile.

You help us to be a success in the future,

Through your scoldings, hard work and nurture.

May you be blessed for your patience,

time and encouragement.

Oh we thank God for everyone of you precious gifts he has sent.

Many of you left your homes and family

To be a part of our school's assembly.

No matter where we reach in life,

We will always remember the beauty of your sacrifice.

" Farewell , Sir "

The Demise of Mr Chua Cheng Chye

The Late Mr Chua Cheng Chye
Ex Headmaster of ACS Primary Malacca 1968 - 1977 , Scout Master 1st Tranquerah Scouts Troop 1950s , Captain of 1st Malacca Company of the The Boys Brigade

Mr Chua left us on the 7th November 2008 at the Malacca General Hospital. Just 10 days short of his 86th birthday.
He generously gave us his lifetime work , guiding young people and developed them to be a better person and preparing ourselves as we enter adulthood. He was indeed a great teacher and a father figure to those who have had the privilege of being his students , ex scouts , ex brigadiers or friends and acquaintances.
